After graduating from Columbia University in 1983, Mr. Obama worked as an advocate for the poor and a community organizer for a Catholic charitable organization in Chicago. He then went back to school to get his law degree, which he obtained from Harvard Law School, with academic honors, in 1991. He returned to Chicago and became a civil rights lawyer, then a professor of law for nearly twelve years. He decided to run for political office, and became a state senator from Illinois. After being re-elected several times, he ran for U.S. Senator in 2004 and won. His next job after that was president.
