AnswerPsalm 39 is a prayer of contrition, supposedly written by King David or his chief musician, Jeduthun, although scholars now say that the psalms are a genre that did not exist at the time of David. It begins with the author saying that he had promised to remain silent but could no longer do so. He then asks the Lord for forgiveness, finally asking to be spared before he dies (goes hence) and is no more. The fact that he prays to God but does not anticipate an afterlife (v 13: " ... before I depart and am no more.") is instructive, compared to modern belief.
