When she was in her 80s she led an expedition to the Holy Land to search for those locations where Our Lord was born, suffered and died as well as relics of Our Lord. She is said to have discovered the True Cross of Our Lord as well as a number of other important relics. With funding from her son, Constantine, she had churches built over these sacred sites.
St. Helena was the mother of Constantine, who conquered the Roman Empire in the early fourth century and made Catholicism the official religion of the empire. St. Helena made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and found the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. Her feast day is August 18.
