William McKinley was the first president to appear in a movie: he wasn't president yet, but in 1896, he was seen in a moving picture (as movies used to be called) entitled "McKinley at Home." Movies were brand new, and this was probably the first time anyone had seen a presidential candidate on the screen. Pres. McKinley served from March 1897 until he was assassinated in September 1901. He is best-known for leading the US to victory in the Spanish-American War. As for his domestic policies, he was known as a very pro-business president, and he promoted American business by raising tariffs.
