Sort of arbitrary, but normally a strait is a long sea passage between a large island and another large island or a mainland, or between two mainlands. Examples: Strait of Juan De Fuca, between Vancouver Island, Canada, and Washington state in the USA. Strait of Gibralter, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (with Europe to the north and Africa to the south).
That depends on what mainland you're referring to. Vancouver Island is separated from the US by the Straight of Juan de Fuca, Vancouver by the Straight of Georgia, and Asia by the Pacific Ocean.
a straight is narrow body of water, and a channel is a wider body of water.
