Actually, the kickdown is what causes the transmission to downshift into second gear when the throttle is almost wide open. Also referred to as passing gear. There will be a rod, cable, or even an electic device that goes between the butterfly/throttle body control and the actuator/pressure valve on the transmission. On newer cars, it is controlled entirely by the PCM.

Carburators have multiple stage throat openings that open in series as power is demanded of the car. By "kicking" donw or stepping on the gas pedal to the floor for a short period ALL of the intake throats open at once and the car can deliver the maximum torque.

So if you have a four or a six barrel carburetor then all the barrels pen up with gas and air flowing thru each one! POWER!
