Think of the internet as a wire that connects all the computers in the world. (the ones that have internet anyway). The companies that provide the internet for these computers(meaning the ones that connect the wire for them) Assign certain numbers called internet protocol addresses(ip address) to each of them. Because these numbers are very lame(how would you like to type 124.24.175.37 to get to Google) the domain name system was invented to make the internet more user friendly. Basically its like algebra. 25=x. In the same way 124.24.175.37=Google.com(by that is not Google's actual ip address its just an example) So when you type the URL Google.com, Google's domain name server knows what you actually mean is 124.24.175.37, so it directs all traffic between your computer and the computer marked by that number.
