A geographic region is a defined area on the surface of the earth. There are major regional regions such as South America, North America, Africa or Europe, etc. The purpose of regions is to study a particular area, cultural trait...virtually every thing on earth from cultural to physical features. You have ethnic regions, climatic regions, latitudinal regions, hot and cold deserts of the world, etc. Basically a region is anything you want to map and study in a particular area of the world, or a particular aspect of culture such as architecture, language, population concentrations, disease environments, etc. To be a region, the area does not have to be called a region but for the most part, major areas are called regions. Megalopolis is a region, but the name "region" is not in the title. Same is true for Appalachia.
