Tap into what's "happening." American Idol is a boom of a topic to talk about. If you don't know about it, then start watching it on TV. You could say something like "What did you think of that girl ________who sang on American Idol last night?" It leaves room for debate and there ... you have a conversation going. If it's an all male group then football is usually the U.S. choice of sports. If you aren't sports inclined then learn a little about it. Talk about what has been on the news that relates to teens your age. There was that terrible Virginia shooting, but I can well imagine teens all over the world relate to that. Canada felt terrible about it and we worry about this sort of thing happening in our own schools and teens here are talking about it and trying to prevent it from ever happening here. Good/bad news it gets the conversation flowing. Act easy going and sometimes a "hi" is all you need to do and once you are in the group of two then you can feel out what direction they are going with their conversation. There are teens favorite singers, bands, rap groups, etc. Sometimes teens are too busy trying to make an impression that they forget to listen to what the other person(s) is saying. Listen to what they are saying and then jump into the conversation (not being over-powering) but say something like "Oh yeah, heard about that. Really a bad scene" or "You just reminded me of another guy that sounds like that." The conversation should feel right to you and not forced. The old quote, "If you have nothing to stay then stay silent."
