A hemi is the name of a Chrysler v8 that came with cylinders that have hemispherical combustion chambers(half a circle). New genIII hemi's are not trun hemi's like the ones from the 50's-70's. They have modified chambers with 2 squish pads(more oval looking). Thier legend is based their superior flow capacity, due to: opposed canted valves that allow larger valves than normal wedge heads, central spark plugs and straighter runner/ports. Hemi is the only motor that was banned at one point or another from ever U.S. form of racing( Indy, Nascar, NHRA) They still power "The Most Powerful Cars in the World" Top fuel dragsters and funny cars, 8000+hp pushrod V8s :)
