It was an agreement between Nazi Germany and the USSR that they would not attack each other. Germany was planning on invading Poland, and did not want the Soviets to interfere. Additionally, both countries agreed not to ally with or otherwise assist any enemies of the other country (for example, when Britain and France declared war on Germany a few days later, the Soviets promised to not ally with them or otherwise help fight the war).

There were other secret provisions however. The big one was that Germany agreed to allow the Soviets to take control of half of Poland, as well as the three Baltic states. The Soviets were also allowed to take part of Romania as well as Finland. The Soviets did in fact seize these territories. However, when the Soviets attempted to conquer Finland, their invasion didn't go well and they nearly lost the so-called Winter War. The Soviets were forced to settle for a small part of southern Finland instead.

The Pact came to an end a couple years later when the Germans broke it by launching a massive invasion of the Soviet Union. This invasion is known as Operation Barbarossa.
