I had this problem after an accident (i was not At Fault). The 'pop' usually happens if I break hard for a light, or take off quickly from a stop.
I was told it was the shock mount. Had it relplaced at sears for $70, sound went away.
One cause of a popping noise from the front end while backing up in cold weather is the drive shaft. A mechanic can help find the problem.
There is something serious wrong, take it back!
