The Short-tailed Chinchilla has not been seen in the wild since the last one was spotted in 1953. They are breed in fur farms for their pelts, and for the pet trade. They are listed with a status of "critically endangered" with the population trend as "decreasing", according to IUCN. Red List There have been some reports concerning populations that might be on the border with Chile, in regions that are considered very isolated. While the Long-tailed Chinchilla has about half of it's population, roughly 5,000 in an enclosed protected reserve, and the other half, about 5,000 is on privately owned unprotected lands, but the Chinchilla is protected in any of it's habitats.
