Earth's orbit around the Sun is an elliptical one. When it's closest to the Sun it's called the Perihelion. The distance is about 91.4 million miles or 147.1 kilometers. When the Earth is farthest from the Sun it's called the Aphelion. The distance is about 94.6 million miles or about 152.2 kilometers. During Aphelion (Earth further away from the Sun), the Northern Hemisphere's season is winter while the Southern Hemisphere's season is summer. During the Perihelion, the hemispheres experience the opposite seasons. There is a difference on how much of the Sun's rays we receive while the Earth is at these points. The difference is 3.3 degrees.

It only gets a few thousand miles further or closer to the sun. But this does not impact temperature.
