An anachronism is anything that is out of place in the time period it has been placed in.
The item is often an object, but may be a verbal expression, a technology, a philosophical idea, a musical style, a material, a custom, or anything else closely enough bound to a particular period in time so as to seem odd outside it.
For example not so long ago it was socially normal for men to give up their chairs and open doors for ladies. In our modern world, where women are treated on a more equal basis, a man doing this (while perhaps charming) would look odd and anachronistic.
