the mark on the camshaft timing gear needs to line up with the mark on the crankshaft timing gear to ensure the camshaft is in proper time with the crankshaft. You have 2 notches on the timing gears one on the camshaft gear and one on the crankshaft gear. Align them so that the (top) camshaft gear is pointing straight down, and at the same time align the (bottom) crankshaft gear so that it is pointing straight up. The two marks should be perfectly aligned with each other. I almost forgot, make sure your # 1 piston is at "top dead center" before doing this.
