Calcium is a chemical element that can be found in a variety of naturally-occurring minerals and biological materials. Many kinds of rock contain calcium, in particular, limestone, which is a combination of calcite and aragonite, both of which are different forms of calcium carbonate.

Calcium is also very important for life: the hard portion of animal bones are composed of a material called hydroxylapatite which contains large amounts of calcium. The hard outer surface of teeth, called tooth enamel, also contains large amounts of calcium.
