In US commodity marketing lingo, "basis" is what they call the difference between the Chicago cash price and the price paid directly to a farmer at a local elevator. In general, basis accounts for the costs of transportation to the final terminal at, say, New Orleans. For example, if the Chicago cash price is $8.39 per bushel, and some elevators in central Iowa are offering to buy corn from farmers at $8.02 per bushel, then the basis is $0.37 (37 cents) per bushel. This is the amount the elevators must keep to cover their costs of loading and transporting the grain.
