People actually believe the fabricated stories that plaster the internet, probably mostly made up by disgruntled employee's. I am a former employee. I started as a crew member (first job when I was 16 in 1985) I was a district manager when I left to start my own business in 2001. We use to cook the beef fresh in the store, mixed with the original Taco Bell beef seasoning. Taco Bell stopped cooking the beef on location for reasons to help prevent food borne illness. Cooking the beef in a controlled, closely monitored process helps ensure customer safety. Once the beef is cooked in the processing plant it is bagged, refrigerated and shipped to the restaurant where it is easily reheated to the correct temperature (boil in the bag process) It is the same quality USDA inspected ground beef found in your local grocery store. The recipe has not changed since they cooked it fresh in the store a few years back. The rumors and lies circulating the internet about the ingredients are simply untrue. The ingredients are ground beef and seasoning. To my knowledge the seasoning recipe has not changed. It is not much different than what you would find in the common taco seasoning packet at the grocery store. I have absolutely nothing to gain from writing this. I just don't like it when I hear an american icon like Taco Bell taking an unjust bashing. Comparing their food to most ordinary fast food isn't really a fair comparison. Taco Bell is a much healthier food to eat. Too much of anything isn't good for you. But, when I have to make the choice of fast food, I usually choose Taco Bell. it fits much better into my low cholesterol diet.

The contents of Taco Bell beef has been the subject of much controversy after a 2011 lawsuit alleging that their product cannot legally be considered beef. The lawsuit also alleged that Taco bell beef contains only 36% real beef, while Taco bell contends it is 88% real beef.

Taco Bell is still defending the case and officially claims their taco meat contain "seasoned ground beef" as well as water, wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent and modified corn starch.

Beef.

ACTUALLY, very little beef...

"Earlier this year, Taco Bell faced a class-action lawsuit which alleged that the they don't put enough real beef in their tacos to accurately call the filling beef.

Two months after the lawsuit went public, the lawfirm which filed the suit dropped it and said that Taco Bell made "changes in marketing and product disclosures."

Case closed - Taco Bell's reputation saved.

Until I read that the following Taco Bell menu items…

  • Seasoned Beef Seasoning
  • Southwest Chicken
  • Caramel Apple Empanada
  • Corn Tortilla
  • Enchilada Rice
  • Nacho Chips
  • Red Strips
  • Strawberry Topping
  • Zesty Dressing

…contained wood.

That's right - WOOD.

As in trees.

You can find it in the list of ingredients under the following names - cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, etc.

And it's not just Taco Bell.

Lots of processed food manufacturers use "cellulose in food as an extender, providing structure and reducing breakage".

  • It allows manufacturers to claim high fibre content
  • It extends shelf life
  • And it's water absorbing properties can mimic fat - great for fat-free products

And it's also cheap.

And as they say - a penny saved is a penny earned."

  • Beef, water, isolated oat product, salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, oats (wheat), soy lecithin, sugar, spices, maltodextrin (a polysaccharide that is absorbed as glucose), soybean oil (anti-dusting agent), garlic powder, autolyzed yeast extract, citric acid, caramel color, cocoa powder, silicon dioxide (anti-caking agent), natural flavors, yeast, modified corn starch, natural smoke flavor, salt, sodium phosphate, less than 2% of beef broth, potassium phosphate, and potassium lactate.
  • Yeah, sounds bad right? Well, only 36% of taco bells "meat filling" is beef. The other 64% is just tasteless fibers!! Think before you eat at groos restraunts like that. They are greasy, nasty, and get you fat. More people die from fatness than sickness. THINK ABOUT IT!!
