"Lag" means to delay, mostly in computers, TVs, video game consoles, etc. An example would be to press the "Enter" button on your remote, then experiencing a small delay in the instance your finger hits the button and what you see on the screen. Another example (if you play Video Games) is while playing someone online, seeing the other player delay in movement or blink around (apologies for the vague example). It's mainly a visual problem, occurring while using HDTVs and Computer Monitors or using Internet feedback, like using a voice-chat program or playing a game online.

In home device-to-device terms, HD video format has a high data transfer to produce the best high definition video, which takes a longer transfer time from the device to a TV/computer screen than a standard red/white/yellow A/V cable or coaxial. The higher the definition, the more lag experienced. It's not much of a problem as long as you're doing something on said screen that doesn't take immediate visual feedback (i.e. watching a movie). However, if you do need instant visual feedback such as during a video game, lag can pose a issue. As far as I know, HDMI video format reduces lag considerably while keeping HD in best quality.

As for online gaming, your computer/console, connection speed, and distance can all affect Internet lag. If you have a slow/old computer/game console, or a slow connection speed, or a large distance (hundreds to thousands of miles) between you and your fellow game player(s), lag can happen. It takes a while to receive thousands or millions of bytes from two different points while sending at the same time. Lag online is unavoidable unless your fellow gamer is very close to you. Although data can zip around the planet at nearly the speed of light, large amounts of data, such as information traded during online video gaming, can be slowed dramatically.
