mdnsresponder.exe is open source software which allows devices to communicate with each other for sharing music, photos, printers, webcams etc. It is used by Apple (it's equivalent is built into Mac OS X), Adobe, Skype etc. as well as many hardware manufacturers. It will not be a problem to leave it running or if you are never going to use it it can be removed without problems.
