Most advertisements, not just TV, try and sell the people something they don't really need. The seller is trying to get your money and will attempt to get it any way they legally can. Advertisements say a person needs something they really don't or the product can not give what they advertise. An example is ads that make people desire fattening, arty clogging food and drink. The person will live better if they do not consume unhealthy food and drink, but, because advertisements have convinced them they need to consume the product, they want it. TV is the most well known way to sell products, and most people watch TV, so it gets most of the blame, but, there are other ads that create artificial desires for artificial needs.

For instance; an auto-pilot expert system (ES) changes its maneuvering degrees with respect to the wind. So, an artificial intelligence system needs to use some agents to collect more data about its location.
