Gods plan for me is to start a homeless shelter where it will not just be a temporary place for them but a stepping stone. Where they can get job training and assistance in looking for housing. I just don't know where to start. First I wanted to know how much money you think it would take to get it started? I am looking for an abandon church as the building and I will get a van to pick up homeless once I have it ready and take them there.

you need to incorpate as a non profit.Find money, doners, grants ect. I get mine mainly from private people because i don't like asking the government, they have tons of rules and regulations. But if it's private money, you're more free more to run it your way.Find a cheap house in the neighhood. I didn't care about code, because once I had people living there, it was hard to get rid of the shelter. Now I'm talking about a smaller shelter here. I top out at 12 homeless or so. It's in a house, some of them helped me fix it up."How to help the homeless with a shelter"I have been trying to find out how to start a homeless shelter and at this point I have decided to take a step on faith to get information need to be able to get started. 1) Find the requirements to open a shelter check with code and compliance on do's and don'ts.2) Find funding- such as Grants and Donations fund raisers3) Get property type required and locations.4) Check with local clubs, churches, organization on assistance.5) One thing I read was to take a local survey to see if there is a need for a shelter.
A good place to start would be Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee. They focus on not only finding you a job but giving you the skills necessary to succeed. They have many outreach programs for the homeless. Also getting into contact with the Nashville Homeless Power Project might not be a bad idea. They are a community activist group that fights on the behalf of the homeless and are part of a coalition that helps the homeless get back on their feet.
