∙ 14y agoThe 12 constellations of the classical Zodiac are: Aries the Ram, Taurus the Bull, Gemini the Twins, Cancer the Crab, Leo the Lion, Virgo the Maiden, Libra the Scales, Scorpio the Scorpion, Sagittarius the Archer, Capricorn the Sea-goat, Aquarius the Water-carrier, and Pisces the Fishes.
Modern astronomers have drawn boundaries for the constellations that mean that the apparent path of the sun (called the ecliptic, and what determines the signs of the Zodiac) also passes through the constellation of Ophiucius (also called Serpentarius, both mean Serpent holder).

∙ 14y agoDuring the course of the year, the sun seems to pass in front of them as we orbit the sun. Each of the planets are always in front of one of the constellations, as is the moon. That is what makes them significant. Some of the zodiacal constellations are not particularly special in themselves and not very bright, like Aries for example. Leo is probably the best of them from the perspective of observing as it is a lot brighter. Virgo is large and has some nice galaxies visible in it. There are 88 designated constellations in total and many of them are more interesting to observe than the 12 zodiacal ones.
