Both countries used to be part of the former Soviet Union. They are neighboring countries. Russia is about 2000 times larger than Georgia. The population in Russia is about 140 million; Georgian population is about 4.5 million.
South Osseita (was created artificially by Stalin) always has been an integral part of Georgia.
Georgia wants to be a member of NATO and EU, but Russia opposes it. Russia's ultimate goal is to rebuild Soviet Union, so tries to have control over its neighbors. There are number of gas and oil pipelines that pass through Georgia - another reason why Russia wants to have control over it.
Recently, Georgia had huge progress in building democracy (different from Russia), that factor also plays its role as Russia fears that its own people may also want to live in democratic country.
In August 2008, Russia started full scale war with Georgia. Before the war, it gave Russian passports to the residents of South Ossetia, then provoked military conflict and pretending to defend its own "citizens" started the war.
About 20% of Georgian territory is still occupied by Russian forces. The US and EU continues to support Georgia as Russia continues to breach international law.
