There is no holy or religious symbol in Islam religion.

There is no religious symbol or symbols for Islam religion or Muslims as; for example; the Cross in Christianity or the David Star in Judaism religions. Some claim that the Crescent and Star are Islamic symbols. This claim is not true. The claimed Crescent and Star are just historical and/or political symbols developed during the Ottoman empire and originated by the Turks when they were controlling all the Muslim world some time ago.

The non existence of a religious symbol or symbols for Islam religion or for Muslims is on purpose in order for Muslims to be not distracted and seek the blessings of this symbol instead of, or together with, seeking the blessing of the one God (or Allah in Arabic) the Creator; as usually done by many Christians through using the symbol of the Cross.

The crescent moon and star is an internationally and politically recognized symbol and is featured on the flags of several Muslim countries. It is even part of the official emblem for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. However, it is not a symbol of the Islam faith. It is just historical symbol that has nothing to do with the religion.

The Crescent moon may be thought as a symbol of Islam because the Islamic calendar is a Lunar calendar and not a Solar calendar. Muslims use the lunar calendar to mark the beginning of months (It's important for their fasting month, and the pilgrimage month).

During the life time of prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a plain green flag was used.
