In Vietnam GIs called that the "smooth pineapple grenade" because it was exactly like the old WWII pineapple grenades with-out the cut grooves...it was smooth. With the added safety pin, it might be called the M61 grenade.

The new "Baseball grenades" were seen in the field about '70-'71. Could throw em a tad further, but they didn't seem like "real grenades" to hold like the ole smooth pineapples did. Baseball frags didn't have that traditional look to them. And, maybe it's just old faded memories not being accurate, but it seems that those old baseball grenades gave off a smaller explosion than the smooth pineapples did.

What is the body of a grenade made of?

Depends on which grenade. Assuming you mean the standard fragmentation grenade used by the US military, they are made from sheet steel. Coiled inside of the body is a steel spring, notched in over 900 places. On detonation, the steel spring breaks apart at the notches, and the bits become projectiles. For the WW 2 era fragmentation grenade, the bodies were iron castings.

Does the hand grenade have any steel in it?

Depends on the type. On a fragmentation grenade, the bodies will typically be made out of steel, whereas aluminum is more common on non-fragmentation types (incendiary, smoke, etc).

If a grenade was right in front of you and it blew up would you survive?

Maybe. It will depend on the type of grenade, how big and what it is designed to do. A smoke grenade will simply surround you with a cloud of smoke. A fragmentation grenade will send shrapnel in all directions, if they don't hit a major blood vessel or major organ, you can survive.

How heavy is a frag grenade?

It depends on what kind of grenade it is. The M26 and M26A1 grenades are 21 oz (595 g). The M61 grenade is 16 ounces (453 g). The M67 grenade is 14 ounces (397 g). The MK2 grenade is 21 ounces (595 g). The No. 5 Mark I Mills grenade is 22.5 ounces (638 g).

What types of grenades are used today?

stiealhand grenade, frag grenade, smoke grenade tabun gas grenade, and sticky grenade stieal? (Steel?) hand grenade, frag grenade, smoke grenade, tabun gas grenade, sticky grenade. There are also Anti-Tank HEAT and white phosphorus smoke, or other types of smoke grenades that are thrown and, or projected by rifles and other launchers. Fragmentation grenades and flairs can also be launched from a rifle grenade launcher/adapter. Furthermore, there are also offensive and defensive fragmentation hand grenades. Offensive grenades have either a plastic case with out fragments, or many very small fragments that do not travel far and are thus little danger to the advancing troupes who tossed it some required distance. The Offensive hand grenade has fragments who's size is chosen to trade effective radius against chance to inflict a disabling wound. Larger fragments travel farther, but there are less of them which reduces the chance of success at longer ranges where their spread is farther apart.

Who made the pinapple grenade?

Nearly all US ordnance/weapons were subcontracted out to various companies from WWII through the Vietnam War. For example Singer Sewing Machine made some firearms; Ithaca manufactured some Colt .45 pistols, etc. The US Mark 2 "pineapple" grenade, produced from just after WWI thru the Korean War (1950-1953) had a serrated shell resembling a pineapple, thus earning that name. The serrations were intended to evenly spread the shrapnel, but tests showed that those grooves were not necessary. The US Mk II was replaced by the M26, a SMOOTH grenade with no serrations, but retaining the same shape as the pineapple grenade (the M61 was the same grenade but modified with a "jungle clip", a safety wire to hold the spoon (handle) in place). The jungle clip was designed for the Vietnam War, as servicemen in the jungles used the grenade's handle to attach the frag grenade to their uniforms and rucksacks (back-packs). If the pin worked it's way out, and the spoon was pulled off it caused accidental explosions, as when the spoon was accidently pulled off, the frag was armed and detonated. The jungle clip provided an extra "tie on" to keep the handle (spoon) in place. Although some people may have called the M26 (M61) a lemon shaped grenade, most GI's in Vietnam called it the "smooth pineapple" frag. The M67, replaced the M26 (M61) in Vietnam, being the newest frag issued to the GIs for the war in Vietnam. It was shaped like a baseball for easier throwing, and was referred to as the "new baseball grenade" by the GIs. Most servicemen in Vietnam first saw this frag in about 1969. All baseball frags had a jungle clip on them.
