The United Kingdom was formed in 1707 when England and Scotland united their parliments. Both countries had shared a monarch since 1603 when King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. At this period in time Wales was also considered a part of England (this is the reason that they are not represented on the Union Flag). It wasn't until 1800 that Ireland joined the union and in 1922 what is now called the Republic of Ireland withdrew from the union leaving Northern Ireland still in the union. Currently the UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the official name of the UK is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The group of islands off the west coast of Europe is known as the British Isles. The two largest islands are Great Britainand an island split into Northern Ireland in the North (sometimes called Ulster) and the indepndent Republic of Ireland (Eire) in the south. In addition to these islands, there are what are called British Protectorates - islands that have some independenve but which rely on Great Britain for support, defence and so on. Such an island is the Isle of Man, which has its own currency design and its own (ancient viking-style) parlaiment called the Tynwald. Great Britain is made of three separate countries, each with some autonomy. These are Scotland, England and Wales. Often foreigners (expecially Americans) refer to Great Britain, the UK, or even the British Isles as 'England' but this is wrong. The United Kingdomconsists of Great Britain (i.e. England, Ireland and Scotland), plus the province of Northern Ireland. The Act of Union in 1800 united Great Britain with the whole of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This actually came into force in 1801. Simmering troubles in Ireland ended with the split in Ireland in 1920 forming the independent Irish Free State - now the Republic of Ireland - and the province of Northern Ireland (which was made up of six counties from the old country), which eventually happened in 1922. In 1927 an act was passed that the new United Kingdom would consist of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which it has remained to this day. Incidently, the word 'Great' in Great Britain has nothing to do with the power of t nation or anything jingoistic or patriotic. Great Britain is an old title used to differentiate it from 'Little Britain' - the region in Northern France that is, in French, called Bretagne, or, as we in the UK say, Brittany. The United Kingdom is another name for Great Britain. I'm sure you have heard of Great Britain. The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain, Scotland, and Wales, with Ireland cooperating and peacefully united in some way that I don't really understand. These countries "united" in order to have uniform money, laws, rules of the road, education, etc., the same way the United States of America did. See the above information for the more precise and correct nations that make up the U.K. For details, such as the date the U.K. was formed, another person will have to come along and tell you. Unlike the United States, most of the countries that formed the United Kingdom wanted to remain independent nations. You should look up this information in a good reference book. The history of Great Britain and the United Kingdom is filled with murders, treachery, great heroes, and villains! The Romans conquered England (Great Britain). and when they reached the borders of the Scottish highlands, their commander Hadrian built a great wall to keep the Scottish from going into England! (They found the Scots to be ferocious warriors and savages!) Look it up! Read all about it!
