The Saturnalia was an ancient Rome festival held in what we now call mid-December (the calendar has changed quite a bit since then). The festivities lasted as much as an entire month, and were held to honour both Saturn the Roman god of seed sowing and gardens and Ops, the Roman god of fertility and prosperity. Durring the time of celebration no assemblies were held for public affairs and no punishment of crimes was given.

Adults exchanged gifts and charmed dolls for health and prosperity. Children received gaudy gifts and pictures and the household slaves were given a day of freedom to join in the celebrations.

The Saturnalia has it's origins in Strega, ancient Roman (or Italian) paganism.

Celebrated mid December (starting the 17th and going until the 23rd) it was a time of gift giving and much merrymaking in honour of the gods: Saturn, god of agriculture; Ops, the goddess representative of the earth; Bacchus, god of wine.

How did Christmas be a holiday?

Christmas is a birthday celebration for the savior of the world, Jesus Christ. The celebration began when pagan Romans declared a week of lawlessness to be December 17-25. The Christians did not like the pagan festival so they decided to take the last day of the pagan celebration, December 25, and make it a time to remember the birth of Jesus.
