According to www.fuel economy. gov (no spaces ) 24 MPG highway driving
In a 1988 Ford Ranger : With the 2.9 liter V6 engine , 4X4 : It has the Mitsubishi FM146 5 speed manual transmission ( transmission code " D " ) that takes ( 2.4 U.S. quarts of 80-90W gear lube )
it could be the shift linkage being that both gears over there wont work
Under the hood on the left-hand (drivers side) valve cover. It's mounted in a rubber grommet towards the rear. The crankcase vent hose is plugged into it.

According to a ford ranger forum, if it's a 5 speed manual there isn't one! Haha I thought I was going crazy that I couldn't find it! Or I've also heard in other cars there is a stick inside the cabin of the car. But ford rangers that are 5spd manuals don't have em!
5-w30
most have drain plug on side of transmission
If its a manual transmission any 5w-30 motor oil will work fine. However I personally use Honda's specific manual transmission fluid, available at any Honda dealership.
