Driving from Chicago to Toronto, take I-80/I-90 east to I-94, then I-94 to I-69, then I-69 to Port Huron, and cross into Canada at Sarnia, Ontario. Once you cross the bridge into Sarnia, pick up 402 to London, then 401 to Toronto. It might not be quite the shortest route, but it's usually faster and easier than going through Detroit.
Starting from Toronto, you can take the 401 all the way to London, or the QEW/403/401 to London. Then take the 402 to Sarnia. Once you cross the Bluewater Bridge and clear customs, take I-69 to I-94 to I-80/90 right into Chicago. You could stay on I-69 right to I-80/90 if you like, but it's a little longer. Crossing the border anywhere along the Niagara River is the longer route. I prefer to avoid crossing at Detroit.
It takes about 24 hours to drive it. Once out of of Canada, take 190S to West 90 to South 79, and then South 19, East 64, South 77, East 26, South 95, then West 70, South 95... then take exit I-395 into Miami Beach.
