I would suggest staying with the same engine the vehicle came with.Wether it be a used engine or just have the engine in truck rebuilt will be the cheaper route.By changing the engine by going up in horse power may require changing some of the electrical harnesses and ecm and more costly depending on whether some of the other Mazda engines hp rated above your model will be compatible from a wiring and ecm stand point.I know with the 86-93 models alot of the engine upgrades require changing the harnesses for the wiring and ecm however the electrical inside the truck stay the same(the harness wiring is soley for the engine components).I am not sure on your model however check out mazdatruckin.com should be correct page for Mazda info on engine swaps it should layout the picture better than I can.
