the 1999 came with traction control, side air bags, sound processed alpine stereo & CD changer stock. they also have bigger brakes, 16 inch tires & wheels.better lighting. the lowest wind resistance of all designs. it was also the last full frame, rear wheel drive town car model.

Answer1998 and newer had larger brakes, that's a plus. But they look like a slightly oversized Toyota or Mazda. Also, starting in 1998, Ford reduced quality of the interior (upholstery, seats, etc) a bit.

The 1990 had the old 5.0 liter pushrod engine and the old AOD transmission. They made the change to the 4.6 overhead cam egine in 1991 and pretty much all 1992 and newer have the AODE transmissions.

Also, most owners rate the 1993 - 1997 Town Cars as the best of the lot. We have both a 1994 and a 2003 Town Cars and wholeheatedly agree with those comments, incidently.

If you are looking for comfort, reliable, and easy to work on buy the 87-89 town car. With regular oil changes, transmission every 50,000 miles those cars will last forvever. I have 300,000 on mine and stil running like a watch. I love it. keep it tuned and you get 26 miles to the gallon.

Answer90.. only year with the newer body yet still had the most reliable engine ever.. the 5.0

I would say the 95. The 90 had the 150hp 5.0L and the AOD which isn't the strongest trans out there. 91-early 92 got the 4.6L but still had the AOD. Most 92's and all 93 and 94's had the AODE. Better than the AOD but not by much. If not perfectly maintained, expect replacement before 150k miles. In 95 they went from the AODE to the 4R70W which is basically a stronger, updated AODE and doesn't seem to be as picky about perfect maintenance. In 96, they got the plastic intake manifold that will crack on you. Not a maybe thing. They all do at some point, just a matter of how lucky you are. From 96-01 they all came with the plastic intake although an updated replacement is available. The dealer will probably charge in the neighborhood of $800+ to fix it for you. In 98+ the interiors were heavily downgraded to the point of being very uncomfortable if your used to an older one. If you are coming from any other car out there, it is perfectly fine but to go from an 80's or early 90's Towncar to a 98+ is aweful. As far as reliability, the 4.6's regularly go 500k+ with just regular maintenance in Limo service. I have over 200k on mine and she still loves eating the rear tires off.

AnswerI have a 1994 TC with about 247k on it, still runs like a champ, although she's starting to let her age be known (heater core blew a few months ago, radiator sprung a leak the other day., etc.)
