There can be many causes for a whining noise in automatic transmissions. The least expensive thing you can try to eliminate the noise is to have the Transmission Fluid and filter changed. Some shops will only replace the fluid unless you ask for the filter to be changed, so ask.

where is the transmission shift solenoid located on a 2001 Mazda protege
not likely. the 1997 Mazda protege is a different chassis than the 1999 protege (BHA to BJ, respectively). the two transmissions between the two generations are also different, the BHA utilizing the FB4A-EL automatic transmission and the BJ utilizing the FN4A-EL automatic transmission. they also have different engines. you're better off going to a junkyard and pulling a auto trans from a third generation protege (1999-2003)...that would work. if you have any further questions, you can follow this link: www.protegefaq.net hope this helps!
To add transmission fluid to a 1998 Mazda Protege, locate the transmission reservoir. It is typically located on the left hand side towards the back of the car under the hood.

you must unbolt the frame from the body to be able to access 2 bolts
75w 90
its inside the transmission by the oil pan
Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done? Absolutely not - you'll destroy your transmission, and flat towing a front-wheel drive vehicle is never a recommended practice, even with a manual transmission.
It is the center to the right of the engine...
