Why do humans suffer? The Bible gives us a clear explanation.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 says that "because time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all"Sometimes we suffer because we are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Galatians 6:7 says "whatever a man is sowing, this he will also reap" The things that we suffer can be a direct consequence of our own actions.

People fight wars, commit crimes, pollute the environment and do several things motivated by greed rather than concern for other people or even themselves.

Ecclesiastes 8:9 says: "All this I have seen, and there was an applying of my heart to every work that has been done under the sun, during the time that man has dominated man to his injury."

When they do these things without regard to themselves or others, we all suffer the consequences. Ignoring the fact that there are consequences doesn't mean that we won't be affected by them. This is one of the causes of suffering.

Another reason for suffering, as The Bible explains, is what is stated at Romans 5:12. "That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned-."

Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and they fell into sin. The result of their sin was death, which was passed on to all humans. Both good and bad humans suffer because of the sin and imperfection that we have inherited from our disobedient parents.

1 John 5:19 Explains the primary reason that people suffer in the world today. It says: "We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one."

We live in a world that functions on selfish principles and that rests in the power of Satan the Devil. Therefore, it is a world full of injustices and the suffering that come along with them.

The Bible explains why we all suffer as quoted above, but it also holds out a promise of a time when all human suffering will no longer exist.

Revelation 21:3-4 says "With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: "Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

The Bible speaks of a time when God will remove all the pain and suffering we endure today.

Answer:

The basic cause of human suffering stems from a quality humans possess, called emotions. Human suffering comes about from desire, greed and lust.

A person, who cannot find contentment, cannot find peace. A person, who cannot find peace, cannot find fulfillment. Prosperity, Power and Popularity are not the solutions to human suffering, because you may have them all and still feel incomplete. There are many prosperous, powerful and popular individuals who need mind altering drugs and other freaky activities to keep them excited.

There are 3 types of suffering:

1. Suffering of daily life such as disease, decay, death and destruction due to obvious physical and mental impairments that occur daily

2. Suffering that arises at the cessation of pleasure due to the inablility to maintain permanenty, a pleasant feeling or a happy mental state.

3. Suffering of uncertainty of the future of this life and the lives to follow.

The cause of suffering:

Everthing in the universe is either mind or matter, both of which exist in the form of energies undergoing very rapid changes and therefore immutable or impermanent. Since everything in existence is conditioned, whatever arises must also cease.

The arising human body (matter) will cease due to the rapid changes of the matter's energies resulting decay and disease.

The energy of the mind also changes rapidly resulting the inablility to maintain a desired state of mind.

Another view:

Human suffering, or animal suffering for that matter, are just part of the course of nature. True that humans can contribute to their own or others' suffering, but, as of yet anyway, humans have little to no control over nature and the disasters it sometimes produces. Examples of how humans contribute to their own or the suffering of others all involve greed in some way. Squandering Natural Resources involves greed. Humanity's contribution to climate change involves greed. Rape involves greed, as does any other crime. War involves greed. Even necessity sometimes causes the suffering of another, as when you are forced by necessity to harm another in defense of yourself. All this would still hold true no matter what your particular religious view, or even whether a God existed or not.

Strange how people turn to the bible justify suffering. Not surprising I suppose. The Church itself has done much to add to the sum of human misery.

Jewish view:

Consider the two following quotes, which seem to clash. One is Isaiah 45:7, which clearly states that God "creates evil," which includes suffering. The second is Eichah (Lamentations) 3:38, which says "from the mouth of the Most High, evil...did not result." The answer to the contradiction may be seen in a third verse, Proverbs 19:3, which says "the foolishness of a man corrupts his way, yet his anger is directed against God." Meaning, that while some suffering is undoubtedly created by God (such as the death of an infant), a lot of it is the result of humans' choices. The Torah reminds us that we have free-will (Dueteronomy 30:15-20); and without the possibility of bad results, free-will would be vitiated.

Further discussion of theodicy is beyond the scope of this answer, and entire books (such as Job) have long ago been written about it. Suffice it to say that Judaism sees the existence of evil as a test, and/or the result of our own (humans') bad choices, and/or a warning (such as pain, which shows you what part of your body needs repair) or a message (Genesis 42:22), and/or mere misinterpretation (such as the bee's sting, which to a child is unmitigated evil but which adults recognize as a protection for that insect which pollinates all fruit-bearing trees).

Also, when viewed in the context of the afterlife, when worthy people who suffered may be recompensed and the prosperous wicked will have the opposite, the apparent injustices of this world become easier to understand.

The cause and cessation of human suffering is a basic purpose of Buddhist belief. Buddha's Four Noble Truths state that:

  1. All humans suffer (feel there is an unsatisfactoriness) in their lives
  2. This is caused by desire for improvements i unimprovable conditions
  3. There is a cure for this problem. The cure is to overcome desire
  4. This can be achieved by following the Eightfold Path.
Where other religions attribute this to an innate evil in human nature, Buddhism sees it as a normal condition that can be recified by understanding and persons own efforts.

Our suffering comes from our denial of our divine nature, our lack of appreciation of our connection to all things, our resistance to impermanence and our addictions and attachments to things that only bring temporary relief.
