The era that saw the start of the Renaissance also saw the transition from noblemen who were primarily warriors to nobles who were primarily administrators en patrons of culture and arts. Italy saw that change happening even more clearly than other countries, since warfare between the various Italian city-States had totally become the affair of small mercenary armies fighting almost 'mock'-fights under professional officers and generals, leaving the noble families free to pursue other interests.
The high-ranking noble as patron of the religious arts had moreover a long tradition - in Italy as elsewhere - that had come into being even a century earlier: think of the various beautiful Books of Tides and the many paintings of those patrons worshipping Maria or the child Jesus. But the Renaissance brough the appreciation of non-religious art to the fore, and the increased wealth of noble families gave them the opportunity to still compete with each other: no longer as fighting knights, but in showing off their level of culture and their discernment in finding and choosing the best artists, architects and academics to sponsor and to be part of their Court .
