Difference between spring and struts 2.0?

A spring is just a spring, a strut is a combination shock and spring unit which fits between the A frame and the vehicle body.

What tools are required to change the struts on a car?

Struts on a car are a shock absorber that prevents the car from bouncing. A socket wrench is required to change the struts.

What is a shock absorber for cars?

Part of the suspension system of the vehicle. Sometimes referred to as "struts." Although the two ARE somewhat different they both do the same thing. They stop the vehicle from "bouncing" and "swaying" and they "stiffen" ride for better driver control.

Is there a difference between rear and front struts on a 95 mercury sable?

my understanding was that struts typically are on the front of a vehicle while shocks are on the back. yes there should be a difference, far more weight in the front of a sable than the back, even with the trunk loaded. my guess is that they are very different parts.

What is the difference between shocks and struts on a Volkswagen vento?

A 'strut' is an abbreviation of the word 'Macphereson strut - named after its Scottish inventor. A 'shock' is an abbreviation of the word 'Shock absorber'. The Macphereson strut is a suspension component that has a 'damper' (or shock absorber) and a heavy duty spring all in the same unit. The spring allows the vehicle to travel over bumps without the vibrations from the road surface transferring to the vehicle body and the Shock absorber is designed to remove the oscillations in the spring caused by the road surface (it slows it down and stops it from continually bouncing by having a 'Dampening' effect). A 'Shock absorber or Damper' is a single component that is part of the suspension doing the same job as above but is a separate unit to the road spring which allows it/them to be removed or replaced independently of each other.

How do you tell if you need new struts for a 2001 BMW x5?

On any vehicle equipped with struts, a strut is just a shock absorber that is a integral part of the steering geometry. Some symptoms are unusual vibration in steering. scalloped or cupped wear patterns on the tires, and oil leakage from the top of the strut tube. Most struts last about 50K MI.

What are struts on your car?

They are an integral part of the steering and suspension that also performs like a shock absorber. They can be on the front or the rear.

Why you need struts?

Struts are a suspension design that diminishes the problems associated with an "un-sprung mass". The un-sprung mass is the mass of the wheel, tire axle and whatever else follows the road surface. The vehicle floats along on the springs, hopefully making a smoother, more comfortable ride. When a tire hits an uneven part of the road surface, the mass/inertia of the vehicle causes the springs to deflect, allowing the tire to move over the surface of the road imperfection while, hopefully, not transferring too much vertical acceleration into the vehicle. Here's where the struts come in: Struts are a lightweight version of the shock absorber/suspension/spring assembly. Once the spring deflects, the wheel goes up. The spring of the strut is still pushing down on the tire/wheel assembly and once the vehicle is past the road imperfection the tire will be pushed back down. Now the un-sprung mass has vertical inertia. With inertia of the the un-sprung mass comes the potential for harmonics, meaning that the un-sprung mass will bounce. Struts and their predecessors "shock absorbers" dampen out the harmonics caused by hitting such road imperfections. By minimizing the bouncing of the wheel, the driver is better able to control steering and stopping. There is quite a bit of confusion about what struts and shock absorbers do in a vehicle and while the struts are a combination of a shock absorber and a shock absorber, most of the time people only replace the central shock absorber part of the strut. For more information go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacPherson_strut While there are disadvantages to a Macpherson Strut suspension, one of the major advantages is that a vehicle with a single wishbone ends up with a lower "un-sprung mass"

How do you change the struts on a 1999 Chevy prism?

The struts on a 1999 Chevy Prism are changed by jacking the vehicle up and removing the wheel. The struts are then unbolted from the vehicle while the tension is low, and new struts put in place.
