my understanding was that struts typically are on the front of a vehicle while
shocks are on the back. yes there should be a difference, far more weight in
the front of a sable than the back, even with the trunk loaded. my guess is that
they are very different parts.
front struts go behind the wheels and in the front and rear shocks go in the back
The front struts on a Mercury Sable are replaced by jacking up the vehicle, removing the wheels, and supporting the vehicle on jack stands. The retaining bolts can then be removed, the struts taken out, and new struts put in place.

All Toyota Camry's have struts in the front. This is also accompanied with strut mounts and bearings that are located between the mount & strut. I highly recommend replacing the mounts & strut bearings with the struts. My experience has shown that the mounts fail before the strut.
