There are two places that compete:
- the atacama desert in Chile
- Antarctica
As to why. a place becomes a desert when it receives very little precipitation. Precipitation here basically refers to water falling from the sky, either as rain or snow.
And these two places both have very little of that.

∙ 9y agoThe driest state is Nevada with it only receiving an average of 9.5 inches a year of rain. Other dry states include Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana and New Mexico.
