The 3.1 liter engine is actually a V6, not a 4cyl. It's NOT the same multiport injected 3.1 found on other cars like the Corsica, Lumina, etc of this generation because it actually uses a distributor and has throttle body injection and not multiport injection. It's pretty old school. Anyway, the firing order is just straight 1-2-3-4-5-6 and the distributor rotates clockwise.
Sounds like to me the firing order is off, or you have your plugs wires backwards. Maybe a carb issue also. Check for a vacuum leak.
