Check for a vacuum leak or disconnected vacuum line

First check for vacuum leaks in the hoses, especially the hose going to the vacuum modulator on the distributor. Then check for a bad vacuum modulator. Other problems may be worn or bad valves, piston rings, or timing chain or timing gear wear.
You have lost engine vacuum to the control head. Look under the hood back near the distributor and there should be a vacuum check valve. it is most likely broken or the vacuum line is loose or broken.
The Number One spark plug-- which is the one in front nearest the fan. Make sure to remove and plug any vacuum lines leading to the distributor before setting timing, and set with a warmed-up engine. When you finish, the vacuum line with suction on it at idle goes on the vacuum port nearest the distributor cap.

You need a vacuum gage, hook it to a vacuum port that has constant vacuum. It should have about 19 to 25 inches of vacuum at idle for a stock engine if the timing is set correctly. Now quickly snap the throttle wide open the gage should drop to about 5 then back to where it was. You can also set the timing by adjusting the distributor so you get highest vacuum reading.
the distributor controlls the spark, if the spark is advanced, too much, or retarded too much, yeah. it will shake, or not even run. the distributor doesnt usually go out, out of the blue.. if you took the cap off to check gap, or clean it, then put it on, and it is rough, yeah.. that may be it. but if it is out of the blue, running rough, you may want to check it for cracks, (cracks make gaps even hairline and the gaps make it run rough) you should also check the vacuum lines for cracks, and bad connections. the vacuum leaks will mess with the advancement of timing, and can also make it run rough. but to answer the question, yes. a bad distributor can make the car shake.

If the button is not working, might be a vacuum line problem. Vacuum lines engage the 4x4, might need to check the lines to the 4x4 transfer case.
