If it has a properly fitted fan shroud, it doesn't matter how close the fan blades are to the radiator. If there is no fan shroud the fan blades will have to be within a couple of inches of the radiator.
The Haynes manual wants you to remove the fan and the shroud as a unit. This requires disconnecting the electrical connections to the fan, removing the bolts that hold the fan/shroud to the car, and just slipping the shroud off it's mounting tabs and removing. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connector. Unbolt the fan bracket and shroud assembly. Take the harness connector from the shroud. Lift the shroud out of the engine compartment. To separate the fan from the motor take loose the motor shaft clip. Remove the bracket from the fan motor by detatching the harness from the retainers then remove the mounting screws.
