Confucianism began in China, perhaps in Shandong province. The city of Qufu, in Shandong province, is near the locations where Confucius is supposed to have lived much of his life.

Buddhism probably began in northeastern India; according to the Tripitaka, Buddha had achieved enlightenment and started his monastic order at the Bodhi tree, in Bodh Gaya, India, not all that far away from Varanasi. Rajgir, Sarnath, Sravasti, Sankassa, and Vaishali, all in India, are all associated with the Buddha, and thus with Buddhism's origins.
