For Worcester, Massachusetts:
On September 21, 1938, Worcester, Massachusetts was hit by the brutal New England Hurricane of 1938. On June 9, 1953 an F4 tornado hit Worcester, killing 94 people, though it was not related in any way to hurricane activity.
The hurricane, also known as the Yankee Clipper or Long Island Express, was the first major hurricane to strike New England since 1869. It made landfall on Long Island as a category 3. In 2012 Hurricane Sandy did more property damage in terms of dollars, but the 1938 storm is still listed as the second costliest storm to strike New England.
Fairfield, CT was most recently hit by the Western edge of Hurricane Bob in August 1991. It was hit almost directly by Hurricane Gloria in September 1985. Even though I live in San Diego, I was in New England during both of these. I was in Worcester, MA when Gloria hit, and I was driving through Connecticut towards NYC when Bob hit. It was crazy driving in a hurricane, but I had to catch a plane to Japan.
