Cedar is not a scientifically specific name. The word is used to refer to trees of several different kinds, even different families. The famous cedar of Lebanon is Cedrus libani and belongs to the pinaceae family, whereas the American eastern red cedar is a member of the cupressaceae family and has the name Juniperus virginiana. There are a few types of trees which are referred to by Red Cedar.

  • Eastern Redcedar, found throughout much of the eastern United States, is Juniperus virginiana
  • A variation of that species is Southern redcedar, Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola

Both of these are actually in the Juniper family.

  • There is also Thuja plicata, in the Arborvitea family known commonly as Western Redcedar
  • The actual genus for Redcedar is Toona, of which there is the Australian Redcedar, native to Australia!

Hope this helps!
