Today there are two railways that compete as the longest passenger train in the world. However, the global financial situation has reduced the number of passengers so dramatically that the carriages have been reduced temporarily, until such time as ridership increases.

The most notable is the famous Ghan, Australia's famous sleek passenger service that operates across some of the most formidable landscape in the world. Operating with a consist of up to forty-nine carriages, trains typically operate twice-weekly between Adelaide in South Australia, to Darwin, in the Northern Territory.

The 2979 KM journey takes approximately 48 hours and covers landscape where temperatures can range from freezing at night (as low as 18c circa June/July), to the high forties in the peak of Summer (48c December/January).

The second train to accommodate up to 49 carriages is in the United States. Auto Train is a combined passenger and vehicle service operating from Lorton Virginia (adjacent to Washington DC), and Sanford Florida (adjacent to Orlando, Fl). During high season the train operates daily, covering the 1376km journey overnight. Passengers deliver their vehicles directly to the train where they're loaded in customised 'autoracks.' The passengers retire to their own sleeping compartments, ranging from compact single-bed accommodations called 'Roomettes' to a 'Drawing Room' containing lounge seating which at night folds into small double-beds and upper berth. These feature private wash and shower facilities. Meals are included and served in the rolling diner, where meals are prepared on the 'rail level' and meals served on linen tablecloths on the top floor.

Due global financial conditions, both rail services have been adjusted greatly, including the number of carriages being utilised.

Regardless of where passenger rail services operate the length of each train is always limited by the length of the platforms at railway stations.

During World War II, passenger services in the US were operated by private carriers. Due to the essential need to move troops across the country as quickly as possible, some railway services, particularly those operating transcontinental routes, operated combined coach and Pullman (sleeper and diner), services with up to sixty carriages at a time. This often required troops scheduled to alight at a certain major city, the necessity of walking up to a mile before actually arriving at the station platform.
