For ages the people, who were living far away from the sea had no access to common salt. You need to take common salt in hot climate. In cold temperate climate the salt intake is probably not necessary.

There's so much salt in our usual foodstuffs that there's hardly any need to talk about a daily minimum. Unless you're on a really strict diet most likely you're getting more than you need anyhow.

For the average healthy adult, about 500mg is required for basic physiologic function. However, if you're losing higher than normal amounts of sodium through perspiration or diuretics, you may need more than 500mg to avoid little problems like paralysis, seizures or death.
