South America is predominantly Roman Catholic. This is due to the fact that Christopher Columbus believed himself to be ordained by God to propagate His name and His Gospel. His explorations were funded by Los Reyes Católicos de España Fernando and Isabel (The Catholic King and Queen of Spain Ferdinand and Isabella). He personally initiated the process of Spanish Colonization, turning his explorations into wars of conversion. He believed the inhabitants he found in his explorations to be 'inferior' and 'unintelligent'. This mode of thinking was followed by the Spanish explorers that were to come after him. Columbus voyages came at a time of growing national Imperialism and economic competition between developing nations. This was a way to earn wealth and prestige for his investors.
