With hundreds of television news stations competing with thousands of online news portals it can be difficult to figure out who is telling the most accurate version of events. Now that social networking services are giving people the ability to post updates from anywhere, there is more news available to everyone than ever before.

Reading the News Online

The first place most people look for news when events are happening is online. The major news networks from every country in the world are well represented. There are also hundreds of sites that contain news from smaller agencies that are not affiliated with formal news departments. The best way to make sure you have an accurate understanding of events is to look at the reports from several different sites. Check the United States news against the news directly from Europe or the Middle East. You will find that each news site has a slightly different reporting style, and they will emphasize different points in each story.

Hard Copy Newspapers

Traditional hard copy newspapers may seem like poor news sources since they are distributed the day after the news occurs. The benefit of using a hard copy paper, though, is that you can feel more confident that the facts included in the stories are really true. Sometimes internet sources will report inaccuracies in their haste to be the first to report a story. Hard copy newspapers check their facts carefully and give you a more fully researched news report.

Television News Stations

Television news falls somewhere in between online and print news. The coverage on some news stations shows live video from the place where a story is happening, which adds an element that you can’t get on most internet news sites. The television news is more closely edited and facts are usually checked more thoroughly than an internet news site, however. As with internet news sources, the best way to get a realistic view of news events through television is to watch excerpts from different stations. Each television station will have a different perspective on the events, and you will find that their perspective can color the reporting, whether it is intentional or not.

All media is controlled by private interest so none of them are completely "credible". Every good lie involves at least one thread of truth.
