This sounds like it could be some kind of cichlid. A lot of African Rift Lake cichlids (from Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi) are mouthbrooders: one of the parents (usually the female) holds the eggs in her mouth until they hatch. They then care for the brood for quite a long time, up to several months, and if anything threatens the babies one of the parents will take them into the mouth to protect them. This behavior is called mouthbrooding. The Rift Lake cichlids are often quite expensive.
There are other Freshwater Fish that mouthbrood, including some of the rarest and most difficult to keep fish in the hobby. There are way too many to go into, so try typing 'mouthbrooder' into Google and see if you find the one you're looking for.
